Unlike conventional video, 360° videos are recorded in all directions, giving you a complete 360-degree view. While watching these videos, you can control the viewing direction and watch the video from whatever viewpoint you like.
360-degree videos are typically viewed via personal computers, mobile devices such as smartphones, or dedicated head-mounted displays.
On smartphones, internal sensors such as the gyroscope can also be used to pan the video based on the orientation of the device. Taking advantage of this behaviour, stereoscope-style enclosures for smartphones (such as Google Cardboard viewers and the Samsung Gear VR) can be used to view 360-degree videos in an immersive format similar to virtual reality.
360° videos come into their own when visualising existing spaces – museums are the obvious application to give virtual visitors anywhere in the world a sense of what can be experienced during an actual visit to the museum.
360° Videos can be uploaded to Facebook, YouTube-360, or embedded directly in your website, and are viewable on nearly any desktop, laptop, mobile device, or virtual reality platform.
