The South African War saw the ruthless destruction and cruel killing of thousands of humans
and animals. Far more value had been placed on gold and diamonds than on dignity, respect
and the basic needs of humans, animals and the earth. As hard as it seems to forgive past and
present pain, this frees our own souls from self-destruction. May we start to change our
attitudes in words, deeds and thoughts in small steps in South Africa today. As the humanitarian
Emily Hobhouse wrote: “Forgive because so only can you rise to full nobility of character…as
love is more beautiful than hatred.
